Agriculture and Environment Department
Saidi runs the Agriculture and Environment department of Faulu Productions. He believes protecting the environment, and using it well, are key to a good life!

His team works on permaculture, growing food for the refugee community to improve their access to nutritional foods and to sell for a small income. It is amazing what his team have managed to grow despite the desert-like conditions of Kakuma! Many people around the community are encouraged by Faulu to grow their own gardens, but community members are often welcomed by Faulu to use their produce, or help in the gardens. They currently have 61 primary beneficiaries for the agribusiness, and have so far supported 500 families within Kakuma to grow their own gardens.
In the future, Faulu Productions hopes to extend their permaculture gardens throughout Kakuma Camp 2, 3, and 4, and the nearby Kalobeyei Camp, as they are currently only in Kakuma Camp 1. In order to expand they will need to dig new wells.
So far they have been renting a nursery off of a local NGO, but by using newly acquired land they could create their own nursery to speed up development. They need equipment and manure in order to do this.

Saidi and his team also planted 2800 trees in the community last year, with the hope of keeping the soil together to prevent erosion and flooding, to provide shade from the intense sun, and to help clean the air in the camp one bit at a time. He walks around the camp educating the community on the benefit of protecting the environment, encouraging them to plant their own trees and keep the environment clean. He hopes to plant 30,000 trees in the next 5 years. Seeds for Peace (USA) donate seeds to Faulu occasionally. While Faulu has managed to cultivate new seed from some of the crops grown, crops that are required to be harvested immediately need new seed each time.

Ultimately, Saidi and his team hope to continue learning and training more of the community on good permaculture methods, to create a healthier, more sustainable environment for everyone.
