Film Production

Hussein and Ramadhan run the Film Production department. They run this in partnership with an organisation in the local town called FilmAid. They currently have 40 students and 4 trainers.

The film production department focuses on training youth to use a camera, screen write, direct, edit, and act. The training is done by volunteers, and they currently have 40 wonderfully passionate students! Many of the members hope to one day find a job opportunity with a local organisation called FilmAid, start up their own small business in the camp in the future, or find a job in their new community if they are ever resettled.

In the meantime, the department seeks to pull people out of boredom and drug abuse (a big issue within the camp), and help them focus on their talents and passion in film. The students spoke to us about how they love to use their skills to educate the community on issues such as child protection, early marriage, and sexual health. One of the students said that he has tears in his heart for Kakuma, things that happen within the camp that are horrible that he wants to expose and express. He likes to pour these emotions and concerns into his screen writing, and hopes one day to be able to present his this through film production. However, the department currently has no equipment to produce a film. They just use their phones to record any performances or practice. They would love to have the means to showcase their talents locally and possibly even abroad, and to share their stories with the world.

The students find it very difficult learning about camera usage and film production only through theory, but they are incredibly eager and willing to learn. You would love their enthusiasm! They currently practice Monday to Friday from a small room of iron sheets and timber that they built within the camp, it's noisy and hot but they are determined to practice!
