Women's Empowerment Department

An inspiring lady from the Congo, by the name of Estha, works together with her lovely assistant Mercy to educate and empower women within t

he camp! She is the supervisor for the Women’s Empowerment department of Faulu Productions, a department that is doing amazing work!

Estha arrived at the camp many years ago. She found herself saddened by the fact that many women within the camp found themselves having to resort to prostitution in order to provide for their families. The consequences of such are not only detrimental to the women themselves, but also contributes to the high rate of HIV/AIDs within the camp, as well as to the spread of other STDs. Similarly, this increases the birth rate within the camp dramatically, and single or widowed women find themselves with many children and no way to afford to provide for them.

She believed she needed to gather women together, to support and educate each other on a more positive, wholesome way forward to support themselves and their families. Every week she walks from door to door within the four camps of Kakuma, gathering women together for a group meeting that she holds twice a month. The women discuss the issues they are facing, and Estha provides education on family planning and sexual health. She also tries to empower women to become self-sustaining, encouraging them to start their own small businesses to provide the income they need to support their families and take themselves out of destitution, early marriage, and prostitution.

The businesses they hope to get women involved in include hairdressing, tailoring, and permaculture. They are currently involved in soap-making pilot project. This is to improve access to affordable soap for the community, as their monthly ration is extremely small to meet all their needs, as well as providing an income generating activity for the women of Faulu.

The women of the department want to start an initiative, called the “Merry-Go-Round” project. This involves women standing together as a community, together financially supporting one woman to begin her business and get off her feet, and this woman then returning the profits to the community to support the next woman.

Estha would like fundraising for training and equipment, so that she can help support more women to become self-sustaining! Ultimately, Faulu would like the organisation to have a community centre from which the women can run their businesses.

However, we would love support for the main items and materials such as:

• For Tailoring: Sewing machines, material, scissors, needles, chairs, tables.
• For Hairdressing: weaves, braids, hair products, blow driers, mirrors, a tap and basins, and a generator

We would like to congratulate Sakina on her promotion to a lead management position within the organisation, and thank Faulu Productions for their efforts to empower women and promote gender equality. With extensive experience in permaculture, a friendly and incredibly optimistic demeanour, it is no surprise that Sakina has been absolutely thriving in her new role as regional programme manager. We look forward to seeing what she achieves along with Faulu!
