Off to the Permaculture Gardens!

Today, Said, the supervisor for the Agriculture and Environment department, took us around Faulu’s permaculture gardens. We were able to meet some of the beneficiaries (mainly women) who use Faulu’s land for their own agribusiness, to help them become self-sustaining.

They spoke to us about the challenges they face, such as a lack of access to water, inability to control pests, and a lack of equipment to plant, harvest, and water their gardens. They were very emphatic about us not leaving and forgetting to help them! We were amazed by how much the Faulu team manages to grow despite the harsh environment of Turkana state.

Some of their gardens are thriving, but it is hard work, and in order to grow and help more of the community they need more water and equipment. They hope to bring their knowledge and skills in permaculture to all of the camps of Kakuma in the future!

After visiting the gardens, we walked around the Ethiopian district of Kakuma. They have such a buzzing marketplace. Lyama tells us they are fantastic business people!

Saidi discusses his plans for expanding his gardens!

One of the beneficiaries of Faulu's permaculture programme discusses with us her challenges with water in Kakuma.

Discussing the programme with some more of Faulu's beneficiaries, who are very grateful to Faulu for their help in giving them a livelihood.
